Udon Thani Schnitzel Fest
Finally! Schnitzel, Potato Salad & French Fries! Since I do not have a real kitchen in my apartment I really miss cooking some ‘normal’ food once in a while. This weekend I couldn’t take it any longer, held our college kitchen hostage and invited some of my amazing students to taste German food made in Thailand.
Before we started the cooking action I had to buy the food though and that wasn’t that easy. The first problem was to find decent pork meat! I finally ended up to buy it on the fresh market (yeah one could have thought of that before, but actually I tried to find more ‘schnitzel like’ meat). Funny fact: When I went to the butcher on the market i bought almost all the meat he had. At 7.30 in the morning. His face was priceless!
Then I went on my journey to find breadcrumbs (try to explain this to somebody who can not speak English very well…) and other ingredients that are not that common here in Thailand. But not only the Schnitzel made some problems….the potato salad was the even bigger challenge.
Nevertheless I overcame all shopping challenges (call me MacGyver of Schnitzel making) and we started cooking in the college kitchen. After explaining the basic concepts of Schnitzel and Potato Salad my students got started and, honestly, it was great fun to see them rocking the kitchen. Some really knew how to handle everything, some didn’t. Great fun anyways!
After almost two hours (7 kg pork have to be handled!) we managed to finally eat Schnitzel with potato salad (and french fries) with the potato salad being the stranger part for my Thai students. After finishing the meal they took all leftovers home which shows me that they really liked it and that our little Schnitzel Fest was a complete success. I have to admit that it was great fun and delicious but also very very exhausting to take care of everything and to run around the kitchen in order to give advice and take a look at everything and everybody. Despite the stress it was a great day though. Gonna do it again…in the not tooo close future
