Thailand to ban smoking at beaches

What has been announced quite some time ago now became reality, smoking will be banned on all Thai beaches starting Feb 1. 2018. If you still smoke and get caught this might land you in jail for up to one year or cost you 100,000 THB!

Now, this past Wednesday, a first trail started which will last for 90 days and included 24 beaches across the country. During this trial the law will be introduced and beach goers will be informed about the new law but not yet punished, according to Prachachart.
Those 24 beaches that are included in the smoking ban trial surprisingly include quite a few of the most famous tourist spots here in Thailand such as: Patong, Phuket; Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan; Bo Phut, Koh Samui; Chalok Baan Kao, Koh Phangan; Khao Lak, Pangha; and Kor Kwang, Krabi.

As it might come as a surprise for many that this ban has been implemented that fast there’s a good reason behind it as not too long ago 60,000 cigarettes have been found on a 2.5 km stretch on Phuket’s famous Patong beach. If you can’t stop your urge to smoke, most beaches will set up designated smoking areas as we know them from other public places of interest.

This law now is being promoted as ‘smoking ban’ it, however, also includes littering in general. So if you bring a drink to the beach, make sure you take the empty bottle, can, box, etc. back with you as otherwise you might end up getting into some real trouble.
