Thailand to ban smoking at beaches

What has been announced quite some time ago now became reality, smoking will be banned on all Thai beaches starting Feb 1. 2018. If you still smoke and get caught this might land you in jail for up to one year or cost you 100,000 THB!

Now, this past Wednesday, a first trail started which will last for 90 days and included 24 beaches across the country. During this trial the law will be introduced and beach goers will be informed about the new law but not yet punished, according to Prachachart.
Those 24 beaches that are included in the smoking ban trial surprisingly include quite a few of the most famous tourist spots here in Thailand such as: Patong, Phuket; Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan; Bo Phut, Koh Samui; Chalok Baan Kao, Koh Phangan; Khao Lak, Pangha; and Kor Kwang, Krabi.

As it might come as a surprise for many that this ban has been implemented that fast there’s a good reason behind it as not too long ago 60,000 cigarettes have been found on a 2.5 km stretch on Phuket’s famous Patong beach. If you can’t stop your urge to smoke, most beaches will set up designated smoking areas as we know them from other public places of interest.

This law now is being promoted as ‘smoking ban’ it, however, also includes littering in general. So if you bring a drink to the beach, make sure you take the empty bottle, can, box, etc. back with you as otherwise you might end up getting into some real trouble.

I am happy to hear that!!! I really don’t like the smell of the smoke and I think the beach would become better with out that smell.!!!

greattt!! I really like this, but I wonder only the law is enough? I think we already have law about littering on the beach but it still a big problem. By the way, do something is better than nothing ;D

Whoaaa This is like a big change for Thailand now lol. but in Thailand i dont think this would work Thais always break the rule and help each other to break it. Anyway i think this is the great start for a big thing in Thailand.

Nice law and nice change, the smoke of cigarettes can hurt other who did not smoke especially the baby who actually play on the beach. The beach shall be better and healthful, better environment, better people and better lives.

  • Ben Benyapa

Good to see that! Smoker should smoke in the place that they provide. Not everyone can smoke anywhere some people hate the smelling of its. They should cares about the people around themselves such as the children or elderly person.

The reason that smoking on the beach is prohibited comes from the trash which tourists left behind. I agree with this law and I also think that every tourist spot ought to have a smoking area. If there is an appropriate number of specific places for people who smoke as well as a suitable punishment, the odd of smoking in the public may highly be decreased.

  • Warisa Yuktanantana

This is so good because there will be less garbages and smokers should smoke in the right places. Not allowed smoking at the beach is great because people who visit the beach they expect for the fresh air and the are getting away from the city. That’s mean getting away from air pollution.

  • Wanthida Tiwari

This is finally happening! I can finally go to a public beach and not get hit by a whip of smoke with the fresh air I came for! Finally some good action! Bye bye air pollution and hello fresh beach air!

  • Arinrada Boonarchathong

I think it is good to do something with this case, it is a long term problem that we all know but we tend to ignored it because it’s hard to solve. Actually, I think it’s not only about the laws but also the people behavior; if we have a law about it but no one cares, so, nothing gonna happen! People will get back and do the thing that they used to.

  • Ellen Deveaux

It is a great idea to ban smoking. They should also ban littering, but overall it is something that would benefit families that are visiting the beach. I cannot wait to hit the beach during the summer!

  • Ornvipa Assavanig

I think this is very clever idea to decrease the trash along the sea especially cigarette and also attract more tourist to travel in our country.

  • Kimkreme Asawa

In my opinion, this is the time that everyone should help the world by reduce the trash that people make and cigarettes also one of the big trash that have under the beach by the people come and chill and smoking and did’t get it to the trash so all of those thing go to the under water which make everything become worst like unbalance and fish will be effect and everything is a cycle and one day it will turn back to effect to people. So Help the world by our action!!!

For me, as one of a smoker. I feel appreciate to this campaign. I always see many cigarette stubs on the public beaches in Thailand. I have never done that action, and want to blame all people who has never realized about the environment. I hope to see the tidy beaches for my next trip.

  • Prakin Chatteeraphat

For me,as a Thai people, I really appreciated such a law like this because it will make the beaches look more organized and tidy which will attract more tourists. I hope the government manages the process of informing people well in order to make sure all the smoker know the law so when the time the law being use there would not be any problem.

  • Mix Nuttapol

Personally, I feel appreciate with this law and it should be implement a long time ago because nowadays the beach is rather dirty which this law automatically brings all of the beaches to clean and come back in terms of the real nature.

  • Jinjuta Akkharawisutcharoen

Because of the dirtiness, this is very good idea to ban smoking at any beaches. Every time I go to the beach, I always see cigarette stubs on the sand and it looks so dirty. I hope people follow this law strictly and keep the beaches clean.

  • Trustsaran Jantanop

This law will helps improving and restricting Thai citizens from trying to destroy the beautifulness of nature.

  • Beer Suwongwan

we all love to see the place we are chilling tidy and clean. This law would help clear out the cigarette stub on the beach a lot if people understand.

  • Watsakorn Kaewsaard

Yes, finally a law to prohibit in my favorite place. It is really annoying every time I see bunch of cigarette stubs laying on the sand, and the worst thing is that the smell of the cigarette is horrible. I am sure that this law will bring beauty of the beaches back!

  • Tim Saensupho

I like this law. it will help thai beaches be cleaner and will change traveller behavior too. Smoking is not bad but you do not have to do while walking in the beach either

  • Song Sathiraboot

I think that this law is a pretty good idea. When I go to the beach, I couldn’t deny the fact that I will find more than five cigarette butts lying on the sands. Which its quite annoying for me. If you have the time to light up the cigarette, why don’t you spare just a second dispose it in the trash can? For me, this law would definitely considered as a good sign for the environment. However. I think that it would take some times for people to adapt to this new law, since this action has been done and be seen as ‘normal’ in some society

  • Peach Sawangcharoen

Everybody is happy then Peach is happy :)
Hoping to see clear and clean beaches in Thailand soon!

  • Amornrat Orutsahakij

I think that it’s a good idea so because when you go to the beach you want to feel fresh not smelling the bad smoke.
