Isaan Music: Mor Lum vs. Luk Thung

Isaan is famous for a few things. For it’s awesomely friendly people, for a huge amount of red shirts, for Kao Niao Moo Ping (Sticky rice with grilled pork), hot girls and music. Why is Isaan music so famous you might ask? Well, easy. You can hear it everywhere. If you take a bus somewhere up north you probably get waken up with Isaan music short before arrival, when going out partying with Thai friends you will hear Isaan music, heck even most Taxi drivers play Isaan music in their…

North-Eastern Thailand Vocational College English Speech Competition – as Judge

During this years North-Eastern Thailand Vocational College Championships I was selected to be one of three judges sitting in the committee of the English speech competition. Besides being the by far youngest judge, I also was the only non-native speaker there. Turned out that the two old English guys and I did have total different points of view on how to judge students and their speaking knowledge. They are only Thais During the speeches the two English judges always kept talking to each other and complained about the grammar and…

North-Eastern Thailand Vocational College Championships

Day number 4 of the North-Eastern Vocational College Exhibition hosted by our college. While the upcoming two days are more an exhibition style, the past three days have been all about competition. The North-Eastern Thailand Vocational College Championships 2011 took place and showed some great and impressive skillsets as well as some funny failures and emotional victories. I do not have the time and the ability to write about all competitions that took place. I really tried to see as many as possible but had to focus on the ones…

Here comes the rain again – Rainy Season in North Eastern Thailand

Rainy seasonis coming closer and closer and so is the rain itself. Right now there are heavy rainfalls on an almost daily basis. Nevertheless there are days where the sun still shines all the time and makes it almost impossible to stay outside without burning instantly. On the other hand there are days where you have to be scared to be flushed away when leaving your house. One of those days just happened the other day and was – according to my colleagues – just the beginning. Rainy season yay!…

Best High Tech Dance Contest 2011 – UVC…the best!

Today I happened to see the “Best High Tech Dance Contest 2011”. Best High Tech is an electronic store here in Thailand and hosted today its first local dance contest. This won’t be exactly the type of event I’d plan to visit but since some of my students asked me if I could come and watch them perform I tried my best to figure out how to go there (wasn’t that easy with google maps in thai – since it did not show me my goal in the english version)….

Earthquake March 24, 2011

Hey everybody. This is just a short update since I received again a lot of questions regarding this topic. Yesterday evening an 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit parts of Thailand. The earthquake actually took place in Myanmar but effected parts of Thailand as well. Especially the north-western part (Chiang Rai / Chiang Mai area) was hit by the earthquake. In Chiang Rai one women died and several buildings were damaged. Besides Chiang Rai also Bangkok suffered from slight earth movement. According to the first news nothing worse happened though. Specialists say…

Udon City Walking Street & Udon Love Music

It’s party time again in Udon Thani! This time (March 18th – March 20th) there are two events at the same time and the same place. Yeah! Udon City Walking Street First there is the Udon City Walking Street happening right now They try to bring a little bit of the famous “Chiang Mai Walking Street” to Udon Thani. It is far away from being Chiang Mai style, but nevertheless a nice idea. One street (in front of Udon Provincial City Hall) is blocked from cars and gives small stalls…

OTOP – One tambon, one product

I still don’t know why they call it “tambon”. Maybe because they couldn’t find that word in a dictionary and so they thought “hey, let’s create a new word…”. Still think it sounds quite shitty, but whatever. Right now is OTOP time. The OTOP fair takes place from March 3 – March 9 and is place for all different kinds of products from all over Thailand. While this makes perfectly sense for all Thai people I talked to, it is for me just another shopping fair. And unfortunately not a…
