Thailand welcomes ASEAN (by showing it the door)

We’re only a few weeks into an amazing 2016 and many of us are still experiencing joyful hangovers. We didn’t only celebrate the change of a single date (how exciting!) but also the coming to life of the ASEAN Economic Community. After having been postponed for a year it now finally happened. ASEAN ministers couldn’t find any further reasons to postpone it again and so had to face the inevitable. The birth of the AEC. Similar to childbirth the birth of a new economic community lets lots of feelings surface. Joy & happiness,…

Hot topic: ASEAN implementation runs without problems

The F-Word section is dedicated to critical thoughts and opinions. The F-Word stands for Farang Word in this case since a lot of issues are usually “solved” by saying we have different cultural backgrounds. Sometimes that just doesn’t do the trick. We try to show some problems – and maybe even get people to think about those things mentioned. The F-Word might be a bit provocative or sarcastic in times – it is however not meant to offend anyone. Those issues are just being raised because we care – if…

Oh ASEAN brothers where art though with the Rohingya crisis?

Over the past weeks incredible drama has broken out here in Southeast Asia. The whole world is talking about the current migrant crisis and the fact that thousands (!!) of people are trapped on boats in the Andaman Sea between Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. While there have been some very insightful and also some very emotional (according to lots of netizens even too emotional) reports on the crisis there are still a few subjects left that need to be addressed. History & Nobel Peace Prize I am not even talking about…

The ASEAN E-Commerce Bubble – Dotcom hype repeats itself

When history repeats itself. That’s something that is not too uncommon here in Thailand. Not only in the IT sector but in all other parts of development as well. Traffic, education, etc. If one knows ones history things that happen here, quite often, seem to be familiar and one wonders why it happens again even though it happened in other countries a few (or more) years back. This exact same feeling now sets in when talking about E-Commerce and Online Business here in Thailand. “I’ve seen that before”. When you…

Thailand declines further on press freedom index

The Land of Freedom (yep, that’s us, Thailand) continues its fall on the press freedom index. By now it is ranked 134th according to the latest, 2015, edition. Last year we held spot 130. Fun fact though: Thailand is still one of the best countries among all ASEAN member states. Not sure if that’s something to be proud of since we are is still behind such free and open nations as Mali and South Sudan. Every year the Reporters Without Borders (RSF = Reporters Sans Frontières), a NGO based in France (hence RSF)…

ASEAN, actually?

What is that ASEAN and AEC thing, actually? It’s 2015. The year of ASEAN. The year AEC will finally come into realization. Maybe. But let’s not be too critical about it. Just because it already had been postponed for a year doesn’t mean it will happen again. Therefore we all have to get ready for it and the whole region seems to feel the same. Getting ready for ASEAN seems to be THE slogan these days. But what does that actually mean? What is ASEAN? And AEC? What’s happening? And…

ASEAN – the Asian European Union

Since we are heading towards the annual English speech competition and this year’s topic is ‘Vocational Education & ASEAN’ (or something like this – topics are told in Thai…) I thought it might be a good idea to go a little more into this topic. So what does ASEAN actually mean? Many people think that the European Union is something special and unique in this world…well…they are right! ASEAN is not exactly like the EU but in order to ease the explanation we can compare it a little bit. ASEAN…
