Curtains up for the third participant in our Bangkok Pizza Challenge. Pizzeria Basilica.
This time it is a ‘real’ Italian style restaurant. Nothing extraordinary or crazy here. Just ‘real’ style. Let’s see how it worked out. Basilica is a small chain that operates, as far as I know, three restaurants with all of them in the Sukhumvit area. It’s quite noble and prices are a little higher than in most other places.
A few cool things before we start: The service, surrounding, interior and everything related is realy quite nice. European style all the way. Well, almost. So let’s see how Pizzeria Basilica ends up competing in our evaluation.
The location is quite easy to reach. BTS to Ari and then a short 5 minute walk. If you are doing it like most of the other guests there and go by car, that’s no problem at all as well. There’s enough parking space. Once you are there you will find the illuminated logo that guides you through your next italian experience in Bangkok.
The atmosphere is, like mentioned above, a little more noble than in the places we visited before. There is a lot of staff present that just waits to take care of you and your wishes. The English proficiency is quite well and everybody is professional friendly. When trying to joke around however it didn’t work. This might be because of our bad jokes though of course. Nevertheless the atmosphere itself is very nice. Comfortable lighting, sofa-esque seating in the back of the restaurant and enough space to not feel like in a Thai kitchen. However also without the ‘wow’ effect.
Let’s talk money. The prices are, like you expect it in the Sukhumvit area, quite high (and again with service charge of course) and that’s where we have to go more into detail. When prices are that high I also expect extraordinary service and quality. If I pay around 500 THB for my Pizza I simply expect it to be ‘perfect’ and not just ‘quite good’. We’ll see in the next paragraph if that worked out. The prices itself, like already stated, are quite high and level up the expectations.
The Pizza itself was, tada, good and decent. We didn’t had to wait to long, the size was quite ok and the topping also. It tasted nice everybody was quite satisfied with the Pizza performance. However, like mentioned above and in older posts, ‘quite good’ isn’t enough here in our quest for THE pizza. Especially not when I have to pay a lot of money. If it was only 300 THB I would’ve said: Ok, nice try, can’t complain. I payed 500 THB though and have to say: The topping could have been more and the taste could have been more ‘italian’ (yeah, that’s a thing). So in the end the pizza was ok but not that overwhelming. Sorry.
Bottom Line: Pizza Basilica is a decent place with decent Pizza. However, taken the price into account, nothing more. It’s quite expensive and not as good as it could be. One positive thing in the end though: My friends all stated that their dessert was really good.
