If Thailand was Westeros – Thailand as the land of Game of Thrones

Thailand is a kingdom, Game of Thrones is about the 7 kingdoms. That’s enough of a similarity for me to look at which kingdoms of GOT could find a home in Thailand – and where would that be. As most of the series takes place in Westeros we simply define that Thailand = Westeros. I know there’s more to the world of GOT but for this article we will mainly focus on Westeros as this is, in our hypothetical fantasy world, where we live.

One more reminder: This is fictional! I did take the descriptions of each area in Westeros into consideration but obviously you can’t fit everything perfectly together, so this is how I would imagine Westeros in Thailand. If you disagree, please voice your opinion in the comment section in adequate manner – or, face me at a trial by combat.

The North – Northern Thailand

That one is obvious, isn’t it?

According to the GOT Wiki The North is describe as follows: “The north is the largest region, nearly as large as the rest of the regions combined. It is sparsely populated, with vast wilderness, forests, pine-covered hills and snowcapped mountains, although it also is home to one of the five Westerosi cities, White Harbor”

If we now look at Wikipedia for a short description of Northern Thailand:

“Northern Thailand, bordering Laos and Myanmar (Burma), is known for its thickly forested mountains inhabited by several hill tribes, each with its own language and culture.”

Case closed. The North = The North. And it remembers.

The Iron Islands – Suratthani (Koh Tao, Koh Phangan, Koh Samui)

Home of the thousand islands (with one of them being ‘dangerous’ Koh Tao). That also basically writes itself. In order to survive here you must be ‘iron born’ (or at least not a foreign backpacker). The islands see their far share of ‘weird’ rituals. The Iron Islands have their weird drowning and being re-born thing, Koh Phangan has the full moon party. You decide what’s more weird.

The Riverlands – Ayutthaya / Central Thailand

The Riverlands are supposed to be fertile lands close to, well, rivers. Here you go. Central Thailand. Rivers (floods). All you need.

The Vale of Arryn – Western Thailand

The Vale is hard to reach and sees lots of different tribes in its region which led me to believe that it fits parts of the more western region of the Land of Smiles.

The Westerlands – Rayong westwards

The Westerlands are said to be a bit smaller but still rich on gold and silver mines and rule by the Lannisters. It feels that this part of Thailand at least somewhat matches that description as lots of business is settled there which keeps the money flowing.

The Crownlands – Bangkok

Well……do I really need to explain that?

The Reach – Central / North Eastern Thailand

“The Reach is the largest region except for the north; it encompasses a region of the most fertile part of Westeros and numerous well-populated villages and towns.”

While Northeastern Thailand certainly isn’t the most exciting part to live, it still has natural resources and the region chosen here which starts in central Thailand and includes Isan, would fit the description of well populated towns and fertile parts rather well.

The Stormlands – Pattaya / Chonburi / Rayong

“The stormlands, located south of King’s Landing, stretch down to the Sea of Dorne and are bordered by Shipbreaker Bay in the east and the Reach in the west. It is one of the smaller regions of Westeros, a land of harsh mountains, stony shores, and verdant forests.”

So while Pattaya and Chonburi aren’t harsh of mountains, Pattaya is certainly a harsh ctiy (sic!) to live at. It’s somewhat south (east) of Bangkok. Also the region gets a bit harsher when going further south-east.

“Dorne is the southernmost region of Westeros. It stretches from the southern Red Mountains near the Dornish Marches to the southern coast of the continent. It is the hottest kingdom in Westeros and features the only desert on the continent.”

Southern most part of the country: check. Hot: check. Welcome to Dorne!

But that’s just my simple opinion. What’s your take on that? What would be Thailand look like if it was Westeros in your mind?
