As someone who’s been living in Bangkok for more than five years now I think it’s probably rather difficult to find new and exciting things to do in the city of angels. Even when looking at exciting or ‘cool’ things to do, been there, done that. So it’s always a pleasure when something new comes along and catches my attention. Enter, GoSnoop.

GoSnoop is an outdoor adventure game that currently only operates in Bangkok but might be opening other venues in the near future as well. On their homepage they describe themselves as follows:

GoSnoop is a 2-3 hours buzzing mysterious puzzling LIVE gaming experience. Players grouped into teams and take on a mission to solve mystery through trails and clues, hunting through a fascinating city and local hole-and-corner wonders.

Sounds cool, fun, and different. That’s enough to gain my interest and I assembled the #MyThaiOrg team of detectives in order to join GoSnoop on a Saturday morning in the heart of Bangkok’s old town, Rattanakosin. A few days before the game started we already received the brief via email that included the case we had to solve and a few basic instructions as to where to meet and what to expect. Upon arrival at the meeting point we were briefed one final time. The case we’ve been assigned to unravel was the following:

The Rattanakosin Island police have been investigating the disappearance of a Thai family. Mr. Somsak, his wife and their daughter have been missing for several days and their fate is unknown. Unfortunately, due to a lack of concrete evidence, the police have not been able to trace their whereabouts, or find out exactly what happened to the family. Your Mission: Your mission is to review the evidence and re-trace the events leading up to the family’s disappearance. Follow the breadcrumbs to solve the mystery and identify key information that might help you find the missing family.

I appreciate the realness of this task. It’s not hard to imagine that the police wasn’t able to crack such a case 😛 So said and done, Team #MyThaiOrg obviously was up for the challenge and challenged three other teams to a race against time to see who would solve the mystery first. In order to get different experiences in, our team was very diverse. We had three different nationalities (German, Finnish, Indonesian) present as well as different experience levels (5+ years, 3 years, 1 year) in regards to how long everybody stayed in Bangkok. Other teams consisted of expats as well as of tourists alike which shows that this game could suit anyone.

Once the briefing was done groups started to run off in intervals of 60 seconds in order prevent all of the teams just following each other. After the first few minutes each team seemed to develop different approaches to solving the riddles that appeared on the way (a guidebook would give you directions and ask questions you would need to answer in certain areas) so that we actually did not see much of each other during the duration of the game.

As I don’t want to spoil the game for future players here I will not tell you where exactly we went and what exactly we had to do, as the current mystery is called the “Golden Mountain’s Eclipse” I do think I can post our picture from the Golden Mount though as that’s pretty obvious that one has to go there 🙂

The riddles one has to solve while trying to solve the mystery are related to the actual ‘case’ but also give you hints as to where to go next and what to look for so that you don’t only need to be good on your feet but you also need to be able to use your brain cells while being in motion.

What I also liked about this game is that you, while solving those mysteries, also get to see a few spots of Bangkok that you might not have seen otherwise. My two teammates for example have never been around that area before, even though they live in Bangkok. That shows that GoSnoop isn’t only for tourists, but also for expats who want to see something new.

Overall I enjoyed our GoSnoop mission quite a lot. It was something different, fun, we got to be outside, in motion and got to see quite a few nice spots. If you don’t trust me, here’s what my teammates had to say:

Richard from Indonesia who’s been living in Bangkok for three years: Definitely a different and exhilarating way to get to know the city! It’s a scavenger hunt with a culture twist!

Janniina from Finland who’s been living in Bangkok for a year: Gosnoop was a great unseen experience for me. I discovered new sides of Bangkok and its history. It was a great team building day full of laughter and adventure. Absolute blast!
