Today I happened to see the “Best High Tech Dance Contest 2011”. Best High Tech is an electronic store here in Thailand and hosted today its first local dance contest. This won’t be exactly the type of event I’d plan to visit but since some of my students asked me if I could come and watch them perform I tried my best to figure out how to go there (wasn’t that easy with google maps in thai – since it did not show me my goal in the english version).
Short before going there I met some of our cheerleaders at the college and they told me they will participate at the dance contest as well. So in the end I happened to see two different groups with students of me in it. Great :-)
The first group was “Sexy to S” (not sure if the S stands for Sascha though). Part of the group are some of my second year tourist and first year secretary students. They just started to dance as a group but right now practice every evening after school until 9 or 10 pm. They are really into it and improve very fast. Nevertheless this contest came a little to early for the big surprise. They did not make it into the top 6 and therfore did not ge the chance to show their performance a second time. In my opinion the were on the same level like the 5th and 6th place – but those decissions are always close. So no whining about this. What was really impressive for me to see was the fact that Sexy to S did not start to whine or to be sad. They packed their things and returned to the college immediately….where they practiced for another 2 hours or so. Respect!
After seeing some other groups performing (some with nice ideas & concepts, some quite boring) it was finally about time to cheer and get crazy. The dance part of our amazing cheerleader group UVC KONGCO stepped onto (actually in front of, since they needed more space) the stage and rocked the crowd. They started the whole show with an impressive air throw (whatever you call that thing when the guys throw a girl high into the air) and then set a completely different benchmark compared to all other groups before. Faster, better choreographed, more power….and the crowd went wild. I mentioned quite often that I am a big fan of our cheerleaders so no need to tell you again how much fun it is to watch them. If you have the chance some time, do it.
After a great first performance UVC KONGCO made it into the final round and had to show their performance again. And once more they made the crowd go crazy and showed great entertainment and sport skills. Everything with a smile on their face. In fact, there was only one other group that could compare a little with our cheerleaders. This group showed also a nice choreography (totally different though) and put a lot of thought into their show. They made a highly deserved and very good….second place. This tells you what? YES! Our cheerleaders won the dance competition and had a very good reason to party all night (I hope they did).
Once more a nice show with some very entertaining moments. Oh and what I also liked very much: Even though there was a lot of money on stake (winner received 10.000 baht) every group cheered for the other, clapped and went crazy when others performed. Sport spirit at its best. Well done!
And here is the proof that Thailand’s got talent….
