Mochit 2, Bangkok – The bitch among all bus terminals.

mochit 2, bangkok bus station chatuchak - Khampaeng Pet

There are many bus terminals all over Thailand and even within Bangkok there are more than one. But there is only one bus terminal that can be described as crazy, weird, adventurous and / or dangerous. The bitch. Mochit 2.

When you take the bus to Bangkok from the northern part of Thailand you are very likely to end up at Mochit 2. Most of you tourists are very likely to follow the next best tuk tuk or taxi guy and pay way to much money for a very short way. Besides throwing out to much money you even miss the chance to the see the biggest bus bitch in action. So here is my advice: Do not take a taxi, tuk tuk or motorcycle...

Wifi Internet in Thailand

your place guesthouse bangkok, thailand

Here’s a short post about my Wifi experiences in Thailand. It’s really about Wifi and not about 3G or EDGE since I only have a prepaid sim card and only use Wifi for internet related stuff.

I already talked about mobile phone providers – and those are actually the same carriers that offer wifi services / public hotspots. My favorite so far is still 3BB since it is by far the cheapest solution. For 100 THB per month you get unlimited access to the 3BB broadband network.

However, 3BB does not offer as many public hotspots as other providers like True Move. Basically everywhere you turn on your wifi device you will see truewifi in your menu tray while you have to look for 3bb a little more thoroughly...

Chinese New Year in Thailand

chinesenewyear

Xin Nian Kuai Le!

Now, in 2012 western style, we are entering the Year of the Dragon in the chinese calendar. Being close to China and having a lot of chinese immigrants working and living in Thailand, this time of the year contains a lot of festivals and celebrations over here as well of course.

In four southern provinces here in Thailand the Chinese New Year even is declared official public holiday due to the high amount of chinese people living and working there. In all other provinces the Chinese New Year is not a public holiday, however it still gets celebrated on a wide range an almost everywhere. No matter where you go, you will find chinese decoration, hear chinese music and see chinese celebrations without any breaks.

So if you are not fond of celebrations and parties, you might b...

Udon Thani Anniversary – Firework Contest & Birthday Party

DSCF3125

Once more time for fireworks and party – like always when there is any kind of partyable event coming up. Today however was a real reasonable party day – Udon Thani’s anniversary. Like last year, this year would be celebrated with a firework contest and Thai cultural shows over the next two days. The kick off, my highlight, was the firework contest though. This year wasn’t that big compared to last year (118 more important than 119? – Or maybe because of the flood last year?) – but I am quite sure that next year will be much bigger again.

Nevertheless they rocked some pretty nice fireworks with a lot of surprising effects. Simply head over to facebook or watch the videos above – lights in the dark sky are simply awesome!

Team Canada vs. The World – Charity Ice Hockey Match

ice hockey in bangkok

I seriously thought about only writing three words in this post:

Ice Hockey in Bangkok.

Then I realized those are actually four words so what the heck…let’s write more. The thai red cross organized a charity ice hockey match between “Team Canada” and ‘The World (with Thailand)”. Nice names already (with Thailand) – but hey. Good cause. The entry was free (we donated of course) so we decided to head over to the brand new Central World at Phra Rama 9, search the beautiful (and finally big!) new ice rink and witness the friendly match.

When we arrived the kids teams were playing and some of those little kids already showed incredible skills.

When the kids were finished the adults entered the ice rink and it suddenly felt like on tv...

Your Place Guesthouse, Hua Lamphong, Bangkok

your place guesthouse bangkok, thailand

Once more another weekend in the Big Mango. Once more another guesthouse. Once more disappointed. Especially after my last hostel experience in Chiang Mai it is quite disappointing how little guesthouses in Bangkok care about their customers and how expensive they are in comparisson. Sure, Bangkok is not Chiang Mai – but that’s not necessarily a good thing.

Location: Not in the main hostel area around Khaosan Road – what I was looking for. More quiet and relaxed however still party at night and not as chilled as expected and hoped.

Staff: Doesn’t give a crap. Not unfriendly, but far away from providing service in any kind.

Internet: Claims to have 24 hours internet which isn’t true...

The Student-Farang Dilemma

losingfocus

This is a short post about something that’s kinda bothering me right now. It’s regarding my work as a teacher so if you’re more into the travel stuff of my blog, feel free to skip this entry.

I already wrote about the fact that many students here at the college, when getting older, tend to forget about their studies and try to take the shortcut instead. While this is obviously a typical teacher problem there is one thing that is made in Thailand. In my article on nomadteacher.org I talk about the general issue that students jump into work without proper education. However, over here in Thailand, this work quite often contains ‘working Farangs‘.

This kinda bothers me since I really like most of my students and it’s really sad to see how they (mostly cute girls aged 17-19) slide into this ‘s...

Why THE BEACH – Maya Beach – SUCKS

Maya Beach - The Beach - Sucks

We could make it short and basically say: Because of Leonardo DiCaprio. But that wouldn’t be fair. We need to be more precise and say: Because of the effin film studio and the stupid people in charge back in 2000 who let them ruin one of the most beautiful islands in this planet.

In 2000 Hollywood decided to make a film about some freaks who wanted to run away from their life and live happily in a paradise nobody really knows about. Unfortunately for them, this paradise was ruled by drug lords…yeah. Great movie…NOT. However it had a few nice landscape shots. Those shots have been the reason for one annoying thing…the incredible amount of tourists on this small spot.
