Mobile Phones in Thailand

thai-mobile

Like everywhere else in the world, mobile phones and mobile telephoning is quite important in Thailand. Important in terms of convenience of course – not important to master your daily life.

Despite prejudices before comming here I have to admit that Thais are as mobile phone crazy as all western countries I know – I would say even more. The phone is everywhere with them. On the motorbike, the car, in class. Everywhere! Anytime.

Besides the addiction to mobilephoning and SMS more and more people, especially the youth, use smartphones to communicate. So it is not only SMS or telephoning, it is also chatting, emailing, etc. Despite the high hardware prices phones like the Apple iPhone, Nokia phones or Android devices are very popular amongst students...

For my students: X-Mas Song voting

x-mas in vienna

This one goes out to my UVC (Udon Thani Vocational College) Students. Nevertheless all other readers are warmly welcome as well!

Due to the fact that back home in the western world christmas is coming closer and everybody in Thailand likes karaoke (sing-a-song) I thought it might be a good idea to learn an english song in class. Since I am a very nice teacher (don’t say something wrong! ;-) ), I let you decide which song it should be.

Simply leave a comment or send an email with your favorite. Thank you very much ;-)

1.) WHAM – last christmas

2.) Mariah Carey – All I want for x-mas is you

3.) Jose Feliciano – Feliz navidad

4.) Melanie Thornton – Wonderful Dreams

5.) Pat Boone – Winter Wonderland

Bonus Track – Not for voting! ;-)

Sascha changed his status from it’s complicated to separated

door2

I guess you remember my room-mate rant, right? My roommates from Laos were kind of a pain in the ass from time to time. But I always told myself that it will only last 2 months and that everything will be fine. But now they just opened another chapter of roommate stupidness. Fortunately while I was away.

The invited some friends to drink beer and party. What then happened exactly is a mystery, but it looks like it all got a little wild. When I came home on Sunday my door, that usually holds a big milky glas in it’s frame, was a modern laos-designed walk-through-door.

As mentioned before, I don`t know what really happened – the teacher from Laos said, it was an accident while he was CLEANING the room...

Khon Kaen City Limits

khonkaen

Once more I’m back in Udon Thani! This time I spent the weekend not to far away in Khon Kaen City, capital of the neighbouring province Khon Kaen. Bottom line of this short trip: Nice but somehow same same.

Khon Kaen?

If you pronounce Khon Kaen like it is written on every sign, bus or map, Thai people will have problems to understand what you are talking about. Why? Because Thai people do not say ‘Khon Kaen’, they say ‘Kon Gan’ – why it is everywhere written with K (like King, just to make it clear for my Thai friends ;-) ) will stay a mystery.

Way to Khon Kaen uhm Kon Gan

Like last week, I decided to travel by bus. So I went down to the bus station in Udon Thani, took my thai dictionary and looked for ‘where can i buy a ticket to khon kaen?’...

Work Permit & Bank account

work permit thailand

Ooohoooo I am an Alien, I’m a legal Alien… After receiving my Working Visa for Thailand just in time, it took some more to get my work permit over here in Udon Thani. A work permit is – surprisingly – something that allows you to work within Thailand. It shows your profession and your employer and you need it in order to receive money on a legal basis. That`s why I went to the Ministry of Employment one week ago, handed them a lot of photos and signed even more papers. Now, one week later, the work permit was granted and I was able to open an account with a local Thai bank. Now I can receive salary by the end of the month. Yeah =)

All I want for christmas is you!

first parcel to arrive in udon thani

FIRST! Hehe. I always wanted to be one of the first to come out with a christmas post or song. So here it is :-) But – as you already know me (you subscribed to the updates, right?) – you know, that I wouldn’t say such a thing without a reason. And the reason today is: I received my first parcel! Yeah! Straight outta Tenerife, Canary Islands. Food & clothes (yes, FOOD! Even though I love food in Thailand, Jamon Serano is unbeatable when it comes to real ham!!!).

first parcel to arrive in udon thani

It took only about 4-5 days for the parcel to arrive – and it was still closed. Kudos, Thai post! Now that we know, that it does not take long for post to arrive, let’s get this thing really started :-) Right now I am sitting in my room, starring at the laptop and a whiiiite wall – that has to chang...

First time Mahasarakham

sarakham1

Back home in Udon Thani! After some days in Mahasarakham City, Mahasarakham. Since I heard a lot of Sarakham (how many lazy Thais call it) I did not expect tooo much when entering Mahasarakham after a three hours journey with our college bus. The first impression: Wow! Nice University! Nice Colleges! A lot of students! But where is the college we intended to visit? The college for Agriculture and Technology. Well….we had to pass Mahasarakham city, drive another 10-12 kilometers and then – in the middle of nowhere – turn right. There it was!

The way to Mahasarakham

When leaving Udon Thani, we headed towards Khon Kaen, Khon Kaen and turned left short before entering Khon Kaen city heading into the Karasin direction...

The contest was seperated into three different sections. Speech, Presentation and Story Telling. And what should I say? All of our three contestants rocked! They won in every single category and will represent our college in the North-Eastern finals in December. Wooooohoooo! Thumbs up and kudos for our three Achiva (our college’s name in Thai) girls!

Chaos from Laos | room-mate rant

laos

Alright folks. This is going to be a rant. So basically a typical Germand or Austrian post ;-) So if you don`t want to hear me ranting, simply skip to the good and happy posts before and after this one. Thanks!

Chaos from Laos

Over 2 weeks ago I got some room-mates. 2 teacher from Laos. They stay here for 2 months, we share bath- and living room. Bedrooms are – thank god – seperated. At first both seemed nice. Polite – at least in their behavior since only one of them speaks very very little english.

Now, 2.5 weeks after they moved in they give me a reason to rant almost every day. They crash the toilet flush, the break the water in the kitchen, they never turn off the television, the start washing their clothes in front of my balcony door at 7...
